.KEY MESSAGES...

- Cold today into Monday morning when wind chills could approach
  zero in northeast Nebraska.

- Gradual warming is expected this week, with highs rebounding
  into the 50s and 60s. Some 70s are even possible on Friday and
  Saturday.

Today and Tonight:

Within an amplifying mid-level trough from the Great Lakes into
the mid-MS Valley, early morning water imagery shows an embedded
vorticity maximum progressing south through the northern Plains
and upper-MS Valley. That feature will continue south through
the mid-MO Valley today with a few flurries remaining possible
this morning in far eastern NE and western IA. By this afternoon,
clouds will diminish as subsidence on the backside of the
passing disturbance overspreads the area. Despite the increasing
sunshine, it will be cold with highs in the upper 20s to mid
30s. Blustery, north winds will continue through much of the day
before diminishing by this evening.

Tonight, surface high pressure will pass to the immediate west
of the area with the decreasing clouds and winds enhancing
radiational cooling potential. As such, this forecast update has
trended toward the low side of model guidance on overnight lows,
ranging from the single digits to around 17. Wind chills could
approach zero in parts of northeast NE with single digits above
zero elsewhere.


Monday through Saturday:

A rather uneventful, but warmer weather pattern is expected
through much of the upcoming week. An amplified mid-level ridge
currently positioned along the West Coast will gradually build
east into the central U.S. by the end of the workweek, ahead of
a trough moving into the Interior West. The prevailing northwest
flow aloft will encourage a dry and warmer surface pattern
through Friday. We could see a day or two of high fire danger in
northeast NE; however, there is currently no model signal for a
period of stronger winds that would enhance a wildfire risk.

By next weekend, the 12z global models indicate the above-
mentioned trough potentially moving into the Great Plains.
However, there is considerable model variability in the handling
of that system.

Highs in the 30s and 40s on Monday are forecast to warm into the
50 and 60s from Tuesday through Thursday with some 70s even
possible by Friday and Saturday.

MVFR conditions persist at the terminals through the evening and
overnight hours, improving to VFR between 17-20Z. A few flurries
or very light snow show showers may be possible in the vicinity
of KOMA and KLNK for a few more hours, tapering off later
tonight. Breezy north winds continue through the period at
14-19kts with gusts as high as 25kts.

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Gusty northwest winds of 30 to 45 mph will continue through
  this evening along with scattered rain showers. A few snow
  flakes could even mix in after sunset (Nebraska zones), but no
  snow accumulation expected.

- Coldest air of the season will filter into the region over the
  next 36 hours. Low temperatures tonight behind the departing
  storm system will only be in the lower 20s Nebraska to the mid
  20s Kansas. Highs on Sunday will struggle into the upper 30s
  in the Tri- Cities with Sunday night lows in the mid teens.

- Unseasonably warm temperatures return by Tuesday and continue
  much of next week. Several days of highs in the 60s to near 70
  are expected Tue-Sat.

- Dry conditions are likely after tonight through the next 7+
  days.

Today into Tonight...

A strong cold front has swept through the area and the post
frontal northwest winds will remain particularly gusty (35-45
mph)until around sunset, when they will gradually begin to
decrease. Wind gusts could still be over 25 mph until around
midnight.

We had one cluster of rain showers move through the Grand
Island/Hastings area earlier this afternoon and at 3 PM was from
York to Hebron. There is less activity on radar behind these
initial showers, but with some sunshine we could see additional
convectively driven rain showers develop mainly north of I-80
over the next several hours. The 18Z HRRR indicates that a few
rain showers could turn over to snow around or after sunset
before ending as colder air filters in.


Sunday into Monday...

Northwest winds continue to bring in the colder air, but at
least the wind will not be as gusty as today and we expect clear
skies by afternoon. Still it will not feel pleasant with highs
only in the mid to upper 30s Nebraska to lower 40s over north
central Kansas. Sunday afternoon wind chill values never get
above 30 degrees in the Tri-Cities. Pipe freezing mid teens are
expected for low temperatures Sunday night, if you still have
outdoor plumbing turned on you might want to take care of that.

Monday will be the beginning of the warmup with clear skies and
warmer southerly winds. Highs back into the 40s.


Tuesday through Saturday...

An upper level ridge will develop over the western United States
and gradually slide east into our area as we head through the
period resulting in above normal temperatures and dry
conditions. The next storm system will likely be a cut off low
over the desert southwest that could eject into the high plains
as early as Sunday, but too early to tell if it will focus its
rain on the southern plains or the central plains.

For KGRI/KEAR Airports:

MVFR ceilings will persist through 09-10z before
clearing/becoming VFR. Added a tempo group at KGRI/KEAR as
there could be a back and forth between MVFR and VFR before
ultimately becoming VFR. Skies become clear by the mid morning
hours, with clear skies persisting through sunset. North-
northwest winds of 10-15kts, gusting 20-25kts are expected
through sunset on Sunday. After sunset winds become light as
gusts fall below 15kts.
