.KEY MESSAGES...

- Widespread, dense fog through at least Christmas morning,
  leading to travel impacts due to low visibility. Additional
  widespread fog is expected Christmas night into Friday
  morning.

- Unseasonably warm temperatures through Saturday with record or
  near-record high temperatures possible, before much colder
  temperatures arrive on Sunday into next week.

- Mostly, dry weather continues through most of the forecast.

Christmas

Widespread, dense fog blankets much of the Upper Midwest this
morning. This fog is brought on by weak isentropic ascent over a
broad frontal zone over the region. Fog continues into Christmas
morning and perhaps even into the early afternoon. It will be dreary
while opening presents later this morning. One positive, is the fog
is keeping overnight temperatures a little milder in the upper 30s
and 40s for all but Northeast Nebraska. One negative, is the same
fog and clouds limits afternoon heating, keeping everyone in the 40s
to near 50. That said, temperatures remain warmer than normal.

Friday and Saturday

Fog is expected to redevelop later tonight into Friday morning,
especially over the Missouri Valley and western Iowa. This is due to
the frontal zone making little progress over the next 24 to 36
hours. By Friday afternoon, a weak "cold" front actually results in
warming temperatures. This is due to warm west winds and clearing
skies. Temperatures once again climb well into the 50s and 60s
during the afternoon, approaching records for some. Saturday starts
much the same as on Friday, but change will be on the doorstep.

Sunday and Next Week

By late Saturday into Sunday, a two part weather system will begin
to impinge on the region. One system will swing east from the
Pacific Northwest, while another lifts out of SoCal. These features
cause a low pressure system to quickly lift northeast through the
Central Great Plains. A strong cold front will initially signal this
low pressure systems impact with rapidly falling temperatures early
Sunday morning. Widespread 20s and 30s make their return to the
region and little if any daytime heating is expected. At the same
time, the developing precipitation shield may bring light snow to
the area. At this time, the chance remains low (10-20%), but this
may be something to monitor. The real cold arrives Sunday night into
Monday morning as single digits and teens are forecast. Thus, a
chilly start the next week. The colder weather continues into next
week, but will slowly begin to warm back up as weak ridging returns
to the region.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...

Widespread LIFR conditions are observed across all three
terminals this evening. LIFR ceilings and visibilities will
persist for much of the overnight hours, with gradual
improvement in visibilities expected after 16z to VFR. Ceilings
wont improve by much though, with KOMA and KLNK having pesky IFR
ceilings lingering into the afternoon. Some improvement to MVFR
is expected at KOFK by 21z. However, could see fog
redevelopment (40 to 50% chance of less than 0.5 mile
visibility across all three terminals) after 02z at all
terminals with IFR ceilings.

Winds will remain light under 5 kts through 12z, becoming
east southeasterly thereafter and around 10 kts by the
afternoon.

- A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect from 10PM Tonight until noon
  Christmas day (Thursday) for counties mainly east of HWY-183.

- Low-level stratus/fog could keep highs from leaving the upper 40s
  and 50s beyond a few western lying locations Christmas.

- The warmest day of the week will likely be Friday (mid 60s to
  low 70s) with a cold front tanking highs from Saturday to
  Sunday (from the low to mid 60s to the upper 20s and 30s).
