.KEY MESSAGES...

- Cooler air will continue to fill in behind the passing cold
  front. Saturday and Sunday morning low temperatures will dip
  below freezing for many locations. Damage to sensitive outdoor
  vegetation will be possible.

- Dry conditions and gusty winds will lead to Very High to
  Extreme Fire Danger across northeast Nebraska and into
  western Iowa Saturday afternoon and evening.

- A gradual warming trend begins on Sunday. Relatively warm,
  dry, and quiet weather will accompany this until our next
  potential weather system by the middle of next week.

Today through Sunday...

A strong cold front swept through the region today, pushing colder
air through the forecast area. Temperatures in the 70s across the
area this morning fell 20 degrees into the 50s in as little as 20
minutes. Warm moist air surged ahead of the front, increasing
instability and priming the environment for severe storms.
Thankfully, as of 1 PM, the boundary has edged just southeast of our
border as storms begin to bubble up ahead of it. Storms will be
sequestered to the warm sector ahead of the front, precluding us
from any severe potential this afternoon and evening.

Cold air will continue to pour into the region behind the front
tonight, with temperatures plummeting into the upper 20s over
northeast Nebraska, and low to mid 30s along and south of I-80.
Thankfully winds are expected to remain breezy overnight, out of the
north at speeds of 10-15 mph, with gusts up to 15-20 mph, which
would promote mixing near the surface and potentially prevent frost
formation. Either way, sensitive early season vegetation may be at
risk for damage with sub-freezing conditions over parts of northeast
Nebraska. After collaboration with some of our agriculture partners,
we have opted to issue a Freeze Warning for a swath of eastern
Nebraska that appears to be the most susceptible, despite the fact
that we are still ahead of our average final Spring freeze. The risk
for damage will increase Saturday night/early Sunday morning with
similarly cold temperatures, but little to no wind to prevent frost.
Future headlines will likely need to be considered.

Highs on Saturday will bounce back into the mid 50s to around 60 in
the afternoon. Excessively dry air behind the front will drop
relative humidities to 15-25%. Winds will remain breezy, out of the
northwest at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 25-35 mph expected.
Given the breezy, dry conditions, portions of northeast Nebraska and
western Iowa, primarily along and northwest of a line from Friend,
NE to Dunlap, IA could see very high to extreme fire danger
conditions Saturday afternoon. Therefore, a Red Flag Warning has
been issued for Saturday afternoon and evening. Sunday warms back
into the upper 60s to low 70s. While the air will be dry, with
minimum relative humidities ranging from 15-20 percent, winds will
be much lighter at 5-10 mph with gusts to 15 mph, which would quell
extreme fire danger concerns.

Monday and Beyond...

High pressure will settle over the Central Plains early next week,
behind the departing upper tough. Temperatures will creep back into
the 70s Monday and reach the 80s Tuesday and Wednesday. Dry
conditions combined with increasing winds, due to a tightening
pressure gradient ahead of an approaching surface low, could bring
another day of increased fire danger early next week.

Our next chance for precipitation looks to arrive late next week, as
an upper trough and previously mentioned surface low move into the
region. Shower and thunderstorm chances increase Wednesday night
through Friday, with temperatures likely cooling as we head into
next weekend.

VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period. Strong
and gusty northwest winds will continue through the evening.
Clouds will gradually scatter as well. Winds may briefly weaken
overnight. Winds are expected to increase in speed once again by
Saturday afternoon.

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Northerly winds gusting 40-45 mph through around sunset.

- Clearing skies and decreasing winds tonight-Saturday morning
  will likely result in widespread sub-freezing temperatures. A
  Freeze Warning is in effect for the entire area 1am-9am
  Saturday. Coldest temperatures in the lower 20s from Lexington
  to Ord.

- Critical fire weather conditions likely Saturday afternoon.
  Red Flag Warning in effect from Noon through 8 PM. RH values
  of 14-20% and northwest wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph.

- Near critical fire danger Monday through Friday. The wind will
  be a bit lighter Monday and Tuesday when RH is the lowest. RH
  values will increase some on Wednesday through Friday, but so
  will the wind. Expect better chances for critical fire danger
  by mid to late week.

- Dry and above normal high temperatures expected Sunday into
  most of next week. 70s for highs on Sunday and then 80s Monday
  through Thursday. Next chance for rain will be Wednesday
  through Friday.

This Afternoon into Tonight...

The wind will remain gusty at 40 to 45 mph at times until we
lose diurnal heating/mixing around sunset. The wind will die
down overnight and with clearing skies after midnight we expect
pretty cold frosty temperatures. Lows are expected to drop into
the lower 20s northwest to around 32 in Beloit with a pretty
solid freeze for most areas. Get out there and cover your
vulnerable plants if you already have them in the ground. You
will also need to remember to cover them again Saturday night
for round two of the sub-freezing temperatures.


Saturday...

We have a really impressive sounding with steep dry adiabatic
lapse rates to over 650 mb indicating strong mixing down of
stronger winds aloft. Therefore, increased winds a bit above
NBM guidance using a mix down tool for both winds and dew
points. Consequently, also lowered dew points and RH values a
bit below NBM. The wind will be more marginal across north
central Kansas, but still enough to warrant a Red Flag.


Sunday...

The wind will be lighter and we expect one more cold sub-
freezing morning in the string of cold. It`s highly likely that
most if not all areas will need another frost or freeze headline
for Saturday night into Sunday morning. Plan on covering your
sensitive plants the next two nights.

With the dry airmass in place we do expect a nice warmup into
the 70s by Sunday afternoon.


Monday and Tuesday...

An upper level ridge will swing into the region and we expect
dry and very warm conditions for this time of year with highs
in the 80s.


Wednesday through Friday...

The next upper trough will enter the high plains as early as
Wednesday, although the better chances for thunderstorms will be
west of us on Wednesday. This trough will slowly move across the
plains through the end of the week and it`s too early to tell
how much rain if any we will get from this system. A lot will
depend on the strength and timing of this wave and it`s too far
away to get a good handle on that. But at least our next chance
for showers and thunderstorms will be associated with this
system mid to late week.

VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours. Winds will
weaken this evening by 06z to around 5 to 10 knots out of the
northwest. Winds will become more westerly by 18z and will
strengthen during the afternoon with gusts up to around 20 to
25 knots.

Red Flag Warning in effect from Noon through 8 PM. RH values of
